Most articles on landing page conversion benchmarks quote the same tired line. “2 to 5 percent is good. 10 percent is excellent.” That number comes from a 2020 report about post-launch SaaS sales funnels. It's been recycled so many times it's basically folklore. And it's useless if you're trying to validate an idea.

Pre-launch is a different game. You're not selling. You're fishing for signal. The ask is smaller, the audience is colder, and the math breaks in ways nobody tells you about.

So here's what the actual landing page conversion benchmarks look like when the product doesn't exist yet, plus the part nobody writes about: why a great-looking number can mean almost nothing.

Why pre-launch benchmarks are different from post-launch

Post-launch pages ask for money. The bar is high. People weigh the offer, compare to competitors, and often bounce three times before buying. A 3% conversion on a $49/month SaaS landing page is a real win. Every one of those conversions costs the buyer something.

Pre-launch pages ask for an email. Sometimes a phone number. Sometimes a 30-second survey. The visitor gives up almost nothing. So the rate should be higher. And the signal is weaker per conversion, which means you need to read the number differently.

Here's the trap. Founders see their 12% waitlist conversion, compare it to “2-5% is good,” and declare product-market fit. That's how you end up building something nobody wants. The benchmark was wrong. The confidence was fake.

A few things worth calling out. Cold paid traffic to a waitlist should sit in the 8-15% zone. If you're at 2%, something is broken — probably the headline doesn't match the ad, or the page loads like a brick on mobile. Warm traffic — your Twitter followers, your existing newsletter, your LinkedIn network — converts way higher because these people already trust you. A 35% waitlist conversion from a warm list is normal. It tells you almost nothing about whether a stranger would care about the product.

Why a high conversion rate can be a bad sign

Everyone wants to see the number go up. But a conversion rate that blows past the “suspicious above” column is often a tell that the test is broken.

Three common causes:

  • Incentivized signups. You offered a $20 gift card or “a chance to win an iPad.” Now you're measuring greed, not product demand. Kill it.
  • Warm traffic contamination. You shared the link in your founder community, your boss retweeted it, your friend Maya DM'd it to 40 people. Those clicks aren't cold. They skew the whole number.
  • Bot traffic. Especially on broad Meta audiences. Click farms, scrapers, incentivized click networks. The “conversion” is a fake email that bounces the second you try to reach it.

Industry matters, but less than most benchmark articles suggest. What actually matters is the buyer's pain level and the clarity of the ask.

  • B2B SaaS aimed at specialists: 5-12%. The audience is small and skeptical.
  • Consumer productivity apps: 10-20%. Broader, more impulsive.
  • Creator tools: 12-25%. People in creator communities love new tools.
  • Fintech / healthtech: 4-10%. Heavier trust barrier.
  • Niche hobby communities (climbing, woodworking, knitting, whatever): 20-40%. Small audiences, sharp pain, sharp signal.

The tighter the niche, the higher the rate tends to go, because the page can speak in-language. A landing page that says “finally, a bouldering training app that tracks forearm load” will eat a generic “fitness app” page alive — on the right audience.

How much traffic do you need before benchmarks mean anything?

Short answer: around 100 conversions, or 1,000 visits per variant, whichever hits first. Below that, your number is basically gossip.

Here's why. Imagine your friend Maya ran a SaaS landing page for a sleep-tracking tool. She sent 40 visitors from Meta ads. 6 signed up. That's 15%. Great rate, right?

Maybe. With only 40 visitors, the true conversion rate could realistically be anywhere between 6% and 28%. The confidence interval is enormous. She might sink $800 more into ads and watch her rate settle at 7%. Or 19%. The first 40 visitors aren't predictive of anything.

Specific numbers to live by:

  1. Under 200 visits: read the number as a vibe, not a fact.
  2. 200-1,000 visits: you have a directional read. Enough to say “this is clearly broken” or “this is clearly working.” Not enough to A/B test.
  3. 1,000+ visits with 100+ conversions: now you can compare variants, compare channels, and trust the decimals.

Small samples are seductive because the early number is often extreme. A 30% conversion on 20 clicks feels like a breakthrough. It's a coin flip wearing a suit.

The metric most founders ignore (and shouldn't)

The benchmark you should care about most isn't on this page. It's the reply rate when you email the people who signed up. If none of them want to talk, your conversion rate is lying.

Think about what you want from a pre-launch page. You want proof someone cares enough about the problem to talk to you about it, and eventually hand you money. A signup is a shrug. A 20-minute call is commitment. A pre-order is validation.

  • Under 5% replying yes to a call: your waitlist is mostly cold. Conversion rate was probably inflated by curiosity clicks.
  • 10-20% replying yes: solid demand signal. You've got real conversations to run.
  • 30%+ replying yes: something is really working. These people are already pre-sold.

What to do if you're below the benchmark

If your cold paid traffic is converting at 2% to a waitlist, don't panic. Don't redesign. Don't A/B test button colors. Do these things in this order:

  1. Reread the headline out loud. Does it name the pain in the exact words your audience would? If the headline is clever but vague, fix it. “Write better emails, faster” is worse than “Reply to 40 customer emails in 20 minutes.” Specific wins.
  2. Shrink the ask. If you're asking for name, email, company, role, and use case on the first form — stop. One field. Email. You can enrich later.
  3. Check the ad-to-page match. If your Meta ad promises “a Notion alternative for couples” and the page opens with “productivity, reimagined,” you lose 60% of visitors in the first 3 seconds. The page has to continue the ad's sentence.
  4. Talk to the 5 signups you already have. Email them. “What almost made you close the tab before signing up?” Two of them will tell you exactly what's broken on the page. For free.

The benchmark that actually counts

And until someone puts money down — a pre-order, a paid pilot, a deposit — none of these numbers prove anything. They hint. They shortlist. They don't validate.

An idea is never validated until someone has paid. Signups are signal. Calls are stronger signal. A wire transfer for a product that doesn't exist yet? That's the only number that can't be faked.
